Dartboard Maths has partnered with SOS Children's Villages South Africa in a multi-province partnership designed to rewrite the story that mathematics is more than just formulas on a chalkboard.
The partnership says that mathematics can be a vital key to opening future opportunities. Yet for millions of young learners, numbers are often met with anxiety rather than excitement.
By introducing a complete game-based learning ecosystem, this collaboration aims to bring foundational numeracy and the sport of darts directly to children across eight provinces in South Africa.
Transforming Arithmetic Into Active Gameplay
Founded by professional darts champion and Sky Sports pundit Devon Petersen, Dartboard Maths was born from a simple realisation: the rapid, high-pressure mental arithmetic used on the darts stage could completely transform how children learn mathematics in the classroom, says the partnership.
By tapping into the natural mechanics of darts which include addition, subtraction, multiplication and visual-spatial navigation the learners can develop mental agility without the fear of failure, adds the partnership.
Through this new partnership with SOS Children's Villages, the aim is for young people to not only strengthen their core mathematical competencies, but they will also gain hands-on exposure to darts as an inclusive, focus-driven sport that builds fine motor skills, concentration and sportsmanship, says the partnership.
"In darts, every throw requires strategy, precision and quick calculation," says Devon Petersen. "By combining sports with foundational numeracy, we are giving young learners the confidence to conquer number anxiety and discover the joy of mathematics."
What the Eight Province Initiative Delivers
This rollout aims to go far beyond donating equipment — it aims to provide a sustainable educational ecosystem designed to generate measurable, long-term impact.
According to the partnership, the sustainable educational ecosystem includes:
- Complete Darts and Maths Toolkits: SOS Children's Villages facilities will receive hands-on physical equipment, including Desk Dartboards, number tokens, equation decks and full Darts Starter Kits.
- Facilitator Training Workshops: Caregivers, educators and social workers across all eight participating provinces will undergo structured training sessions to lead interactive matchplays and integrate the toolkit into daily routines.
- LMS Progress and Data Tracking: Utilising the online Dartboard Maths Learner Management System (LMS), programme coordinators will track individual competency levels, monitor engagement, and compile empirical data to demonstrate educational growth over time.
"With Dartboard Maths, a number becomes a target, a sum becomes a game, and getting it wrong is simply a chance to throw again. Confidence grows with every dart. This is what collaboration looks like. Dart Board Maths brings energy, expertise and belief to our children. SOS brings the love, stability and care of a family," says Melissa Cannell, Acting National Director and Head of Programme Development.
"Together, we give children more than a game. We give them tools for school and the courage to say, 'I can do this'," concludes Cannell. Melissa Cannell
